Windy Miller

Windy Miller

Still Bright and Breezy in the Lakes

I might be showing my age now but I can’t remember whether it’s “Trumpton” or the other one. They don’t make animation quite like that any more and I should think if I saw it again I would think it is of its time. However in our house when it’s breezy we always say its Windy Miller out there. Today is rightfully so labelled. Thankfully it is no Storm Callum, although I went out and braved that weather in one of my less sane moments. It is half term and so apart from the dog I was joined by my lovely son for a bracing afternoon walk. The dog at least was eager to venture forth. He wasn’t that enthuiastic. Shadow loves playing fetch and he joined in with one throw of the ball and then said he was too busy daydreaming to engage in any further play. The dog’s view is diametrically opposite, she could play fetch forever. My right arm is starting to build muscles I never knew I had.

We walked down to the beck, but perhaps it is getting a bit chilly to swim as Shadow preferred to look but not touch the water. Then the wind really started to pick up. My mother calls this the October gales. The temperature has dropped but it isn’t that biting wind of Winter. I think it is rather lovely. Nonetheless I might be in the minority as my son asked the dog as I was attempting to open a gate.”Are YOU enjoying this Shadow?”. I didn’t hear her reply and I didn’t need to ask for clarification from my son as to whether he as enjoying this or not. This bucolic family scene reminded me of one of the Herdy Shepherd’s photos of his wife and children and a lovely comment stating that his children were very lucky to live in such a beautiful place and they will remember such times in their childhoods forever. Well my son spends these walks daydreaming about nothing. I know it’s nothing because sometimes I ask. I think he would rather be playing on his computer. One man’s idyll is another’s hell I suppose.
