life on the estate

The Lake District is a stunning place to visit any time of the year and is lucky enough to be gorgeous even in the (sometimes perpetual) rain. Our beautiful corner of the Lake District is home to a host of wildlife and has a character all of it’s own. This Journal tells of moments in time upon the Estate and will give you a seasonal view of the place we wish to share with you.

Insta obsession: well not yet. I have been writing this blog for seven months and I thought perhaps it was time to spread my wings and really move in to the 21st century. Now I am not technologically minded. I have only had a smart phone for the last year and you wouldn’t call me… Read more »

January 18th, 2018

Changing skies in the Lakes District It is such an English trait to comment on the weather. That’s whether the weather is good or bad. Are we all obsessed, I’m sure it is not just me. However I think that living where I do enables me to be that bit more involved with the changing… Read more »

Snow time in the Fells! Last week saw the first flurry of snow of the year. In fact the fells got quite a coating, a white blanket on the tops rather than a light icing. This picture is Blencathra believe it or not. When I got up in the morning the sky was clear and… Read more »

The best side of Ullswater I am definitely biased, I thought I would say that right at the beginning. I believe that Ullswater is the most beautiful of all the lakes and I feel very glad that I live close by. What is it about water? Is it a calming influence? Does it make you… Read more »

Autumn Leaves me Smiling

October 24th, 2017

Glorious autumn colours in the Lakes I don’t have a favourite time of year. I enjoy living in a country where we have distinct seasons so I couldn’t live anywhere where it was just hot, hot, hot. Recently, I met a lovely family from Kuwait who stayed at one of my holiday cottages. I made… Read more »

UNESCO Status for the Lake District

October 9th, 2017

What will UNESCO status do for the Lake District? In July 2017 and after several attempts, the Lake District gained UNESCO World Heritage status. This is quite an achievement as it puts the Lakes on a par with the Grand Canyon, Stonehenge and the Taj Mahal. The difference, of course, is that the Lakes is… Read more »

Beautiful Butterflies and Busy bees.

September 19th, 2017

Its’s not all about the sheep in the Lakes. Shadow is getting older and better behaved, but just not all the time. However she has perfected that hang-dog Labrador expression that melds seemlessly together with the “it wasn’t me, but if it was I am so cute, just forgive me now”. I am coming to… Read more »

Creating a Luxury Lakeland Holiday Home… Well let’s try this one more time. We have finished Lacet Cottage and so now it’s time to start a bigger project, three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Home Farm House used to be the gatehouse to the Estate, until Andre Fleming Hudleston allowed the public road to be built… Read more »
