life on the estate

The Lake District is a stunning place to visit any time of the year and is lucky enough to be gorgeous even in the (sometimes perpetual) rain. Our beautiful corner of the Lake District is home to a host of wildlife and has a character all of it’s own. This Journal tells of moments in time upon the Estate and will give you a seasonal view of the place we wish to share with you.

Where’s The Pretty Picture?

April 24th, 2019

Keep The Lakes Tidy You might ask why I have included the picture below of a black bin liner full of rubbish. We went on litter picking duty again at the weekend. We collected this lot over a half mile stretch of country road near to where we live. It didn’t take long but it… Read more »

Seasonal Changes

March 13th, 2019

Spring Time is Here Again A friend of mine thinks she is going through the menopause. This has somewhat taken me unawares. I wasn’t thinking about changes such as these. Well not at our age. Having said that I have just turned 44 so I suppose it is to be expected. But it started me… Read more »

The Devil on My Shoulder

February 20th, 2019

Here We Go Again… I have thought for some short while whether to write the following. I am generally very private and my journal is about more cheerful things. I may not publish these words  and yet they will have been written. Cathartic for me if nothing else.  Some times, some things need to be… Read more »

Melancholic Musings

January 25th, 2019

Everything Will Be Ok (if you are in the Lakes) It is that time of year when you can feel a little melancholy creeping in to your mind: the weather is grey, the rain is falling, tax returns are due and you can’t escape hearing about another analysis of what might happen in Brett scenario… Read more »

Night Creatures

December 14th, 2018

Winter Time in the Lakes As we get closer to the Winter solstice the nights are still getting longer and it makes me think of Summer with a real sense of longing. Some times I end up taking the dog out when it is dark. Thankfully I haven’t tripped over and broken anything yet. The… Read more »

The Last Rose

November 28th, 2018

A Final Flourish in the Lakes Coming round the corner of the house I came across this beautiful solitary white rose. At that moment it was still a bud and then inevitably, a few days later, it bloomed as you see it here. I say inevitably, but in November I think to find a perfect… Read more »

Windy Miller

October 23rd, 2018

Still Bright and Breezy in the Lakes I might be showing my age now but I can’t remember whether it’s “Trumpton” or the other one. They don’t make animation quite like that any more and I should think if I saw it again I would think it is of its time. However in our house… Read more »

Autumn Winds and Stormy Weather

September 29th, 2018

We are having problems with the website this month so I have not been able to write my blog and even now I can’t upload pictures. Modern technology is all very well, but some times I miss pen and paper. This month has been full of weather, various storms have battered us and caused a… Read more »

Deja vu, Well No Not really.

August 22nd, 2018

Never the same view twice in the Lakes. I often walk in the same places, some times day after day. Shadow never seems to care so long as she is able to charge around and play fetch the ball. She is only 15 months old but she has really got the hang of it now… Read more »

Where are the Rain Gods when you need them?

July 23rd, 2018

Sun, sun, go away? But do come back another day. (The day after tomorrow would be perfect). The British are obsessed with the weather, bu we have good reason. If you live in Dubai, the weather would not be a fruitful topic of conversation. Since coming home 8 years ago my deep seated interest for… Read more »
