life on the estate

The Lake District is a stunning place to visit any time of the year and is lucky enough to be gorgeous even in the (sometimes perpetual) rain. Our beautiful corner of the Lake District is home to a host of wildlife and has a character all of it’s own. This Journal tells of moments in time upon the Estate and will give you a seasonal view of the place we wish to share with you.

Mercurial Weather

February 25th, 2020

Someone said this to me yesterday and I thought it was the most apt way to describe the last month of weather- mercurial. Mother Nature has thrown everything at us. Hail and sleet followed by snow and sunshine and more rain than I have ever seen. There is no point looking at the weather forecast… Read more »

Who Says Romance Is Dead?

December 24th, 2019

A Moonlit Walk Well doesn’t that sounds lovely. Getting out in to the wonderful outdoors with the company of a loved one and the moon to guide your way. Romance still survives, except of course in real life the moon lit walk is at 7.30am and my loved one is my faithful hound Shadow. The… Read more »

Autumn

October 30th, 2019

Leaves and Time Autmn has arrived again, The leaves are fading from green to every shade of rust, copper and gold. And now as the frosts begin to descend in the mornings the leaves are all forced from the trees and there is a melee of crispy, crunchiness underfoot. It’s a wonderful sound. Time has… Read more »

Autumnal Thoughts After a wonderful spring and Easter, certainly weather wise, you might have been forgiven for thinking a wonderfully warm summer was on the way. Alas it was not to be. Henry the Hedgehog

June 25th, 2019

Garden Wildlife I am always amazed how much wildlife I can almost literally fall over, just outside my front door. We have a lovely hedgehog which is often found in the garden. I always think of hedgehogs as being small, but in the flesh they are quite large. They are under threat in towns as… Read more »

Blue and Black

May 22nd, 2019

Wish You Were Here. The Spring weather has been a meteorological smorgasbord. Easter was so hot and gloriously sunny. I always fear that when we get such an unexpected burst of Summer so early in the year, that that will be the zenith of our year and what will follow is just greyness and rain.… Read more »

Where’s The Pretty Picture?

April 24th, 2019

Keep The Lakes Tidy You might ask why I have included the picture below of a black bin liner full of rubbish. We went on litter picking duty again at the weekend. We collected this lot over a half mile stretch of country road near to where we live. It didn’t take long but it… Read more »

Seasonal Changes

March 13th, 2019

Spring Time is Here Again A friend of mine thinks she is going through the menopause. This has somewhat taken me unawares. I wasn’t thinking about changes such as these. Well not at our age. Having said that I have just turned 44 so I suppose it is to be expected. But it started me… Read more »

The Devil on My Shoulder

February 20th, 2019

Here We Go Again… I have thought for some short while whether to write the following. I am generally very private and my journal is about more cheerful things. I may not publish these words  and yet they will have been written. Cathartic for me if nothing else.  Some times, some things need to be… Read more »
